The bureau issued a severe weather warning for the district about 10.30am, with a cold front approaching and a northwesterly airstream strengthening over the state.
The front is expected to slip east across south-western Victoria and Bass Strait during the day, with strong to gale force north to northwesterly winds across southern districts slowly, contracting eastwards later.
Damaging winds around 55 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are forecast during Tuesday over coastal areas of Victoria's southern districts.
The strong to gale force northwesterly winds will slowly moderate from the west later in the day.
The State Emergency Service has advised people to move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure or put away loose items around the house, yard and balcony, and to keep clear of fallen power lines.
