Many in the audience were hospital patients dressed in their pyjamas and one of the orchestra members, anaesthetist and double bass player Geoff Kilminister, was dressed in an operating gown, ready to assist in an operation soon after the performance.
Orchestra president John MacInnes said the orchestra performed at a variety of community venues but Saturday’s performance was the first in the hospital foyer.
Mr MacInnes said the audience of patients, staff and visitors gave a very enthusiastic reception to the six pieces presented by the 21 musicians and conductor Ken Scott during the half-hour performance.
The idea to perform at the hospital was suggested by cellist and hospital physiotherapist Boré Hoekstra, one of seven orchestra members who work in local health services.
Mr MacInnes said the orchestra would next perform a selection of light, popular orchestra pieces at a cabaret event on Friday, August 8, at St Bridget’s hall at Crossley.
They will also perform an extensive cantata, composed by the orchestra’s conductor Ken Scott, at St Joseph’s church on October 25. Apart from the orchestra, the cantata will also involve a 40 to 60-voice choir, a solo soprano and St Joseph’s church’s pipe organ.
The orchestra will also perform a children’s concert in November at the Lighthouse Theatre studio.
Mr MacInnes said the orchestra rehearsed each week and welcomed new members.
