Today the church looks a little different compared to when the first service was held in August of 1864. But the original nave, with its exquisite stained glass windows, has stood the test of the time and on August 17 parishioners will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first service held in the imposing bluestone walls of St Paul’s church.

Parishioner and historian Susan Cole said construction of the church started in April of 1864, and was completed in August of the same year. She said the nave was completed first, followed by the French Gothic style transepts, crossing and vaulted apsidal sanctuary in 1894. 

The tower and spire were added in 1955. 

Mrs Cole said the church has stood the test of time due to many generous benefactors. 

“The Manifold family especially have been huge supporters of the church and the building across the generations,” she said. 

“Many sections of the church were added in memory of members of the Manifold family. The choir area and altar area were added in 1894 in memory of Mr and Mrs John Manifold and the tower and spire are in memory of Edward and Beatrice Manifold. 

“The hall was built following the death of Thomas Manifold in a hunting accident and opened in 1874.” 

She said the church was also dotted with many stained glass windows, many of which join the church building and the neighbouring vicarage on the Victorian heritage register 

Mrs Cole said the celebrations on August 17 would begin with a service at 10.30am, followed by lunch in the hall and a recital featuring the church’s impressive organ. 

She said invitations had been sent to past parishioners, but said everyone was welcome to attend. 

“We’d love to hear from any past parishioners who may not have received an invitation or anyone who would like to attend the celebrations. Everyone is welcome,” Mrs Cole said.
