The cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be screened to mark the occasion of the building’s 60th year, with organisers hoping for plenty of audience participation and costumes inspired by the movie.
Among those fans keen to dance and sing along to The Time Warp will be Heather Reardon, whose grandfather John and father Don helped build and run the theatre.
Ms Reardon said she hoped her mother Hilary would also attend, and added that the family was very proud when the building was officially given the Reardon family name in 2006.
“It was fantastic to get the acknowledgement,” she said.
“My grandfather and father put a lot of effort and sweat and tears into the theatre, so to have that recognised was very good.”
Ms Reardon has found memories of the theatre, where she sold tickets and worked as an usher after school, but admitted it had its ups and downs.
“I saw every Elvis film there, I think,” she laughed.
“But the downside was I had to tell my contemporaries to get their feet off the seats and stop throwing jaffas.”
She said she was pleased with the choice of film for the theatre’s 60th anniversary.
“It’s a favourite of mine,” she said of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
“I was part of that group of people who attended many times in Melbourne at the screenings that had a staunch following every Friday night at the cinema in the top of Bourke Street in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
“We’d sing along and do the actions. I hope the rest of the audience gets into it.”
Port Fairy Film Society president Steve Dawkins said he hoped people would dress up and have a good time.
“It’s a movie people really get into,” he said.
“They dress up, have fun, and doesn’t challenge people’s thinking — it’s just a purely fun night.”
He said there would be a trivia session and a time warp dance competition following the film.
