More than 450 people attended the Waves Gala Ball with Peter’s Project founder Vicki Jellie receiving a standing ovation prior to her speech.
Tickets for the black-tie event had been sold out weeks prior to the weekend with the Fun4Kids marquee specially decorated for the occasion.
Waves Gala Ball organising committee member Bernie Price said the ball had become a popular part of Warrnambool’s social calendar.“Because we’re so close to getting the cancer centre, the ball was partly a celebration of how far Peter’s Project has come in such a short period,” Mrs Price said. “A lot of people got into the spirit of the masquerade theme.
“There were some really elaborate outfits. Some people even painted on their masquerade masks.”
More than $30,000 worth of goods and services were snapped up during a charity auction including Port Fairy and Port Campbell accommodation getaways, radio and newspaper advertising, top tickets for a round 23 AFL game and signed sports jerseys.
There was a sombre side to the event, with a slide show featuring cancer patients involved in the Peter’s Project campaign for the past six years.
“Vicki’s speech reminded us about the reasons we were there and all the people involved in working towards that goal,” Mrs Price said.
