Premier Denis Napthine got on board with young Portland skateboarder Kostya Vallance on Friday to promote the redevelopment of Portland’s skate park.
The site was opened in November 1998 by Mr Kennett, but in recent times the Glenelg Shire and young sport enthusiasts felt the foreshore facility needed rejuvenation.
Dr Napthine revealed the state government would contribute $300,000 to the refurbishment with a further $100,000 from the shire.
“I remember when I was living in Portland and my boys would use the skate park regularly,” the South West Coast MP said.
“The skate park was the biggest thing in Portland for a lot of kids but times have moved on and there’s a need to redevelop it and improve the park for a new generation.”
Budding sport star Kostya has notched up several awards for his cutting edge skateboarding and offered a few ideas about how to spruce up the site.
“We want it to be the best park — it’s the best place in Portland, I reckon,” the eight-year-old said.
