A 70-KILOGRAM dog wasn’t enough to thwart a burglar who broke into a Terang home on the weekend.
Police said whoever broke into the home managed to get past the huge great Dane and could have known in advance about the canine guard.
Acting Sergeant Cameron Ross, of Terang police, said the Dow Street home was broken into overnight Sunday and the theft reported to police on Monday afternoon.
He said it was believed the intruder walked down the driveway, into the back yard and forced open a locked rear door while the imposing pet was in the yard.
“They’ve got past the great Dane in the back yard. It’s huge, as big as a horse,” he said.
“The dog is there to protect the property but they’ve got past it and stolen cash and jewellery valued about $6000.”
Acting Sergeant Ross said most would-be offenders would have been deterred by the very large dog, which led them to suspect the intruder may have been familiar with or had knowledge of it.
“It’s also likely there was more than one offender involved in this crime.”
Terang police are also seeking public assistance after a car was stolen from Cobden and taken for a joyride.
“The car has ended up on its side at the Camperdown railway station. It is undergoing forensic processing,” Acting Sergeant Ross said.
“Police were called about the stolen car at 9.30pm on Monday night. It’s a Ford Festiva hatchback which was stolen from a Cobden address. The car is valued about $5000 and suffered moderate damage with a couple of smashed windows and panel damage.”
Anyone with information about the burglary or stolen car is requested to contact the Terang police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
