THE Hopkins Highway is closed near Ellerslie after a truck rollover about 6.30am on Monday morning.

It is believed the grocery truck travelling south swerved to avoid a kangaroo before rolling on a bend just north of Ellerslie.

Police said the trailer left the road, causing the prime mover to roll onto its side, sliding to a halt.

Police closed the highway between Ellerslie-Panmure Road and Pickfords Lane, assisting detours at Mortlake and Warrnambool until about 3pm.

VicRoads has advised drivers travelling through the area to allow extra time.

The Melbourne-based driver escaped with no injuries.
