Portland fisherman Bob McPherson spotted the mother and calf about 300 metres off shore in Portland Bay yesterday morning.
Department of Environment and Primary Industries’ Amanda Bush said it was the first confirmed official sighting of a calf this season.
“So far this season we’ve only had two confirmed sightings of southern rights in the south-west,” she said.
There was an unconfirmed report to The Standard’s Facebook page of a whale in Warrnambool’s Lady Bay on Sunday morning, but Ms Bush said she wasn’t aware of the report.
