The Trotman family has announced it will shut The $2 Plus Shop in September after 12 years as proprietors — almost 20 years since the premises started as a discount outlet.
“Due to national and international changes in retailing and the inability to negotiate suitable rent for our business we have been forced to close the doors in September,” husband and wife team Stuart and Val Trotman told The Standard.
“This is not a liquidation, but coincides with the end of our lease.
“Our stock levels are high and we hope loyal customers show their support during the next three months.”
Daughter Jacinta Trotman, who began her retail career 17 years ago working with previous owners when it was called The $2 Shop, said it was disappointing to see another locally-owned business closing.
“Stuart and Val will be sadly missed in Liebig Street as during the years they have generously donated to local community groups and many individuals in need,” she said. “We are grateful for the many friendships made through the shop.”
Ms Trotman will continue her online business which sells costume accessories.
Her three siblings also worked in the family business during their school years and university studies.
“We were able to help employ many other young people and at one stage had 12 on the books,” Mr Trotman said.
“Our future is unclear, but we can’t see ourselves moving away from family and our home at Allansford.
“I’ve got a few skills in the construction industry so we’ll see where that leads.”
Before moving to Warrnambool the Trotmans ran a farm at Balmoral and hotels, general stores and a bus run in other locations.
The retail squeeze has been felt across the board with The Reject Shop, Pacific Brands and Noni B among major operators recently reporting a sales slump amid post-budget blues.
