Thief seen loitering outside Liebig Street shop

WARRNAMBOOL police are seeking public assistance to identify a burglar seen loitering outside The $2 Plus Shop in Liebig Street just before closing time at 4pm on Saturday.

Detective Senior Constable Damian Coutts, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said the shop was broken into about 1.45am the following morning after a brick was used to smash a glass panel of a door.

He said the thief gained entry through the rear car park to the back door, used the brick to smash his way through a glass panel and entered through the staff area of the store.

Once inside the building the burglar has gone to a filing cabinet, forced it open and removed an undisclosed amount of cash.

“The same person is believed to have been seen outside The $2 Shop just before closing time on Saturday, between 3.45pm and 4pm,” Detective Senior Constable Coutts said.

“He paces up and down the street out the front of the shop a number of times before he comes back the following morning to break in.

“He literally walks up and down the eastern side of Liebig Street in front of The $2 Shop a dozen times in 10 minutes.”

Detective Senior Constable Coutts said police were now waiting for security camera footage of the man they believe can assist them with their inquires.

The offender is described as being about 40 years old, of medium build, wearing a dark coat with hoodie over his head, light blue jeans, white sneakers and black gloves.

Store owner Stuart Trotman yesterday called on anyone with information to pass that information on to police.

Anyone with information about the identity of the man is requested to contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
