A WOMAN driving with a baby on board was trapped in the wreckage of her car after a head-on smash near Hamilton yesterday.

Rescue crews took more than an hour to free the woman, aged in her 40s, who was then flown by air ambulance to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne with serious injuries, including to her chest, abdomen and back.
It is understood the infant, believed to be seven months old, was not seriously hurt and was taken by road ambulance to Hamilton Base Hospital.
Police said seven people were involved in the accident, which happened on Pierrepoint Road, south of Tarrington, about 2.30pm.
Leading Senior Constable Darren Smart of Hamilton police said the woman’s Mercedes-Benz five-door hatch and a Holden dual-cab utility containing five people collided head-on about 600m west of Thompsons Road.
He said all the occupants of the utility — four men and a woman, all believed to be aged in their late teens or early 20s — suffered minor injuries.
“It’s only a narrow rural road — sealed, but only single lane,” Leading Senior Constable Smart said.
“Both cars were extensively damaged.”
Hamilton State Emergency Service members were called in to cut the injured driver free from her car.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the woman was in a serious but stable condition when she arrived at The Alfred hospital.
The crash scene was not cleared until 6.50pm.
Inquiries are continuing and Leading Senior Constable Smart asked any witnesses to contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
