STRONG defence helped the Warrnambool Rangers senior women overcome the top-of-the-table Sebastopol Vikings yesterday.
The 2-1 win provides a boost to the third-placed Rangers’ finals credentials, and could see them move to second depending the result of other matches played yesterday.
Coach Jim Gray said his team played above all expectations.
“They were fantastic, it was a great win,” he said.
“I don’t think they stopped screaming for about 10 minutes after the final whistle.”
He said that heading into half-time, the Rangers were lagging behind Sebastopol 1-0.
“We were playing against the breeze in the first half, which had some impact,” Gray said.
“We came out a little bit more settled in the second half and we made our move.” Gray said defence held steady against the Vikings.
“We were attacking well and were passing the ball more effectively,” Gray said.
He said the two strikers combined their skills to secure the Rangers’ two goals.
“Bobbie-Lee Lewry and Isobel Stewart were great for us up front,” Gray said.
“Bobbie-Lee can only play certain games with us due to other commitments, so it was great to have her skills available today.”
The Rangers have two games left.
Gray said they needed to win both if they wanted to progress up the ladder.
The senior women were the lone Rangers at the Jones Oval yesterday, after forfeits from opposition clubs meant the senior men and under 17s didn’t have to take to the field.
The under 15s enjoyed a bye.
