Mermaids drop first game in best-of-three final

THE Warrnambool Mermaids have lost the first game of the Big V Championship playoff series in a two-point thriller.

The Craigieburn Eagles ended the Mermaids 14-game winning streak, 67-65, in Melbourne last night, in what was described as a brutal, and hard fought match game.

There are no second chances for the Mermaids now who need to win the final two championship playoff games in Warrnambool next weekend.

Warrnambool coach Lester Pickett said the Eagles were too strong for his girls last night, but he was confident they could overcome the loss and get the job done at home.

"There are no second chances for us now," Pickett said.

"We knew going into the playoffs we had to win two, but there are no second chances now, we can't slip up," he said.
