IF you see flames and smoke on the side of Camperdown's Mount Leura on Tuesday, don't panic.

A small fuel reduction burn is planned on the mount Tuesday as part of a trial to manage fuel loads on the reserve

Corangamite Shire environment project officer Kristie King said the Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf Management Committee would work with the CFA to burn a small area on the northern side of the Mount Leura reserve.

"Conditions are good for carrying out planned burns," Ms King said.

"The burn will improve fire protection for the town by reducing fuel load and enable the committee to see how the native vegetation in this area responds.

"It will take a few hours to complete, during which the Mt Leura Road will be closed to traffic and pedestrians.

"Residents should be aware that smoke will be visible in the town."

Ms King said every effort would be made to minimise the impact of smoke on the township and surrounding residents.

"Some residents may be impacted by smoke for a short time, particularly around the Kawana Court and Wright Street areas," she said.

"Residents in the area are advised to close doors and windows and avoid drying washing outside during the burn.

"Residents with respiratory problems may need to take steps to minimise their exposure to the smoke during the burn," Ms King said.
