In an online poll, readers selected Marcia Miller from The Standard’s top 20 May Racing Carnival outfits, claiming 55 per cent of 2055 votes, while Katrina Hoye received 33 per cent of 743 votes in the People’s Choice award, chosen from images submitted via social media.

For their efforts, both women received a $250 voucher from Mix and expect to put it towards a new winter coat.

Ms Miller, a Deakin University teaching student, attends the races each year and earlier this month finished second in the Fashions on the Field contemporary section.

“It was a fun day. I loved it,” she said. “I sourced the outfit from Cue in Melbourne and Sharon Wilson made my hat in Warrnambool.

“I was trying to pick something weather-appropriate — that’s why I had long sleeves on.

“I chose it because it was classic but unique with heaps of bright colours.

“My advice would be to go out there and wear something a bit unique.”

The 22-year-old expects to pick up a winter coat for the chilly months ahead with her voucher.

“It’s very exciting (to win). I’ve studied fashion design in Geelong so it’s a hobby of mine.”

Mrs Hoye looked outside Warrnambool for her outfit, finding her dress at Camperdown’s Clobber Shop. “It matched my bag and fascinator, which I’d got from Glam Girl in Warrnambool,” she said.

“I’ve been to the races the past three years but put a bit more effort in this time because it was my first time in the ladies’ marquee.”

Mrs Hoye has her sister Adele Griffin to thank after she posted the photo on Facebook for the People’s Choice competition.
