Warrnambool Landcare Coastcare Group is pressing on with a novel approach to saving the environment — speed planting.
“It’s based on speed dating, it’s a kind of social event,” Warrnambool Landcare Coastcare deputy leader Vince Haberfield said.
“You have a group of people planting and you break up into smaller groups of four or five.”
Local volunteers borrowed the idea from a similar group in Melbourne’s east.
This year the group will focus their efforts on Membery Way — specifically along the Merri River belonging to a colony of platypus.
“By planting vegetation we’re increasing habitat for the platypus,” he said.
Around 20 platypus were found during a mating season count in 2012. The group meets this Saturday at 10am.
