The agents have distributed a flyer asking the public to attend the meeting, at which two motions relating to the saleyards will be discussed.
Cr Peter Hulin, a supporter of retaining the selling centre, will move that all councillors meet as soon as possible with agents and business operators to discuss the future operation of the saleyards.
“I won’t be calling for a general public meeting,” Cr Hulin said.
“The motion narrows it down to people directly affected.”
He will also move that chief executive Bruce Anson publicly explain the financial ramifications of relocating the selling centre.
The motion will specifically call for Mr Anson to explain how any council income lost by closing the saleyards would be replaced. “Mr Anson has obviously done these calculations and will have all the answers. This is going to affect every ratepayer because the money will have to be replaced from somewhere,” Cr Hulin said.
The agents yesterday highlighted councillors’ polarised views on closing the yards, placing posters in the saleyards canteen detailing the views of each councillor and Mr Anson.
Monday’s council meeting starts at 5.45pm.
