Detective Sergeant Dave Renney, of the Colac police crime investigation unit, said the incident happened about 10.45pm last night in Wilson Street, Colac.
He said a young man drove home, parked his car and was making his way inside when there was an exchange of banter with a group of half-a-dozen young men aged between 18 and 25 years old.
The young driver was then attacked by members of the group.
The victim's father heard the ruckus and came to his son's aid. The father was also attacked by members of the group at the front of the house.
The victim's mother then came to her son's aid and was struck to the jaw with a pot plant, suffering a superficial injury.
After the group of men fled, the father realised he was bleeding heavily and had suffered a number of stab wounds.
He has three deep stab wounds to his lower left leg, several wounds to a shoulder and a stab wound to a buttock.
Detective Sergeant Renney said two men in the group of six had already been interviewed by police and released pending the issuing of summons for assault-related offences.
"We are requesting any witnesses or anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Colac police station," he said.
"The 40-year-old man has suffered significant injuries and will undergo surgery this morning. The initial victim, his father and his mother do not know the group of offenders," he said.
