Professor Graham Jenkin, a senior scientist and deputy director at the Ritchie Centre of the Monash Institute of Medical Research, will speak at a fund-raising dinner at the Warrnambool racecourse on May 9.
Warrnambool’s Inner Wheel service club has organised the dinner which will raise money for cordblood research, an area in which Professor Jenkin is well versed.
Inner Wheel club spokeswoman Caroline Monaghan said Professor Jenkin is part of a group that is pioneering potential therapies to improve chronic lung diseases and treatment and prevention of neurological consequences of cerebral palsy.
“His research interests include the use of placental derived, particularly cord-blood, stem cells as well as mesenchymal stem cells for potential cell-based therapies,” she said.
Mrs Monaghan said cordblood research was the main fund-raising focus of Inner Wheel clubs across Australia and each year grants were given to researchers working in the field.
She said the main fund-raising day would be held on May 2.
“The Coin for a Cord Day project began in 2000 and has raised $1,950,528 so far,” she said. “This money has supported 33 grants to scientists and researchers all over Australia.”
Tickets for the fund-raiser with Professor Jenkin on May 9 are $50 each and includes a two-course meal.
