Steve McCosh, 23, of Lutana Grove, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court last week.
In addition to being fined he lost his driver’s licence for 12 months.
Mr McCosh told police he was driving his black Holden Commodore sedan on the Princes Highway at Allansford on March 13 when he “decided to be a hero” and overtook a mate.
Defence counsel Alex McCulloch said his client pulled over as soon as he saw the police car.
He said Mr McCosh knew he would have to undertake an $1100 safe driver course before getting his licence back.
His car was also impounded and attracted $1000 in impoundment fees.
Mr McCulloch said his client had taken over his grandfather’s business after his death but that would be difficult to continue without a licence.
Magistrate John Lesser said Mr McCosh had put himself and other road users at risk by his driving but he was a young man who had hopefully learnt a lesson.
Mr Lesser said when Mr McCosh got his driver’s licence back he would need to look after it a lot better than he had. He did not impose a conviction.
