Now at 14 she’s preparing to represent Vic Country at the under 18 girls’ youth national championships in Canberra, along with Simpson teenager Georgia Watson.

The Mortlake teenager said the opportunities for female footballers had grown.

“There used to be nothing and now there are so many girls playing,” Wareham said.

Football is the second sport in which Wareham has earned state honours.

The Mortlake College student represented Victoria at under 15 level and has also played cricket for Western Waves at state level.

“I like playing both equally as much,” she said.

Wareham said Vic Country had assembled a strong squad for the football national championships.

“We have a lot of great girls in the team and we have skills and hopefully we can go all the way to the end,” she said.

Watson, whose brothers Tom and Daniel are on VFL lists, was named Vic Country joint vice-captain.

She represented Victoria’s  development team in 2012 and was a member of the first Vic Country side last year.

Watson said the standard of competition had increased as girls’ football’s popularity rose.

“We play Queensland, WA and Vic Metro, so it’s a tough draw,” she said.

The national championships run from May 2 to 9 in Canberra.
