Shane Grislis won the event’s quick 16 class, with Bradley Fletcher runner-up, as Tony McIntyre won the super street event, Terry Malone edged out Matthew Ireland in the bikes, and Daniel Page won the burnouts.
Warrnambool and District Drag Racing Association president Tony Frost said the weather was perfect for one of the season’s biggest crowds.
“On Tuesday we were debating whether to run the event because of a forecast for some rain but we pushed through and it paid off,” he said.
“Most cars have slick tyres and it’s too slippery once it rains.”
Frost said it was encouraging to see new faces amongst the 300 people enjoying the family environment at the Warrnambool aerodrome.
“With the new committee we’ve always said we want it to be a family-oriented sport, so to have a jumping castle there and only charging a gold coin donation makes it more inviting to bring the young ones out,” he said.
“It’s a cheap sport to get into. Anybody can race out there.
“It wasn’t just the regulars that turn up, which is good to see. We had entries from as far as South Australia and Geelong.
“There were 20 new entries competing for the first time.
“The popularity is growing in the Warrnambool region and that’s a positive for the club.
“We had full-on competition cars, right through to everyday street-driven cars.”
The association’s next event is on April 27.
