The Brett Taylor-coached under 15 side sealed its place in tomorrow’s grand final at Preston with a 101-point win over the David Rodan indigenous allstars side, 14.19 (103) to 0.2 (2).
Taylor said Colac centre half-forward Adam Garner, South Warrnambool on-baller Dominic Watt, Warrnambool half-back/midfielder Tom Sell and North Warrnambool Eagles’ Joe McKinnon were among the side’s best players yesterday. Sell kicked two goals in an impressive performance.
Taylor said his side had opened the campaign strongly with a 5.17 (47) to 4.6 (30) win over Wimmera in Ballarat on Sunday. Taylor, in his first year as coach of the squad, will tackle Central Murray in tomorrow’s final. Central Murray defeated Bendigo and Gippsland (2) in its two matches.
Hampden was a grand finalist last year when coached by Terang Mortlake’s Matthew Irving, with Taylor his assistant. But the Cobden-based Taylor is hoping this year’s squad can continue Hampden’s good strike rate at the tournament with a win.
“The boys have done really well,” Taylor said. “We lost the final to Ovens and Murray last year but I think we have a better all-round squad this year.” Tomorrow’s final is scheduled to start at 1.20pm.
