The Warriors, who were winless last season, scored a 75-point triumph over Nirranda at Cobden Recreation Reserve yesterday. It was the first time they had sung the club song since round 18, 2012 when they thrashed East Warrnambool by 105 points.
The 18.19 (127) to 7.10 (52) result gave new playing coach Daryl Beechey a dream start.
“No one gave us a chance,” Beechey said. “We played well and moved the ball pretty well but we are not getting ahead of ourselves. Just because we have one win on the board it doesn’t mean we will be the big improver.”
Beechey said the Warriors were quick to have a recovery session last night as they look forward to Saturday’s clash with competition powerhouse Kolora-Noorat.
He said the Warriors made a good start to the game.
“We got them on the hop a bit early and they weren’t able to come back,” he said.
Old Collegians turned a 26-point advantage at the first break into a match-winning 49-point lead at half-time after kicking 8.10 to 1.3.
Midfielder Eli Barker marked his return to the club after a year with Koroit with four goals while former Warrnambool player Colby Rix kicked three.
Old Collegians is third on the ladder, just percentage behind top side Dennington and success-starved Deakin University. The Sharks claimed a 78-point win over an inaccurate Russells Creek at Mortlake’s D. C. Farran Oval, winning 19.15 (129) to 6.15 (51).
Panmure opened its quest for a third consecutive premiership with an 83-point win over a young Timboon Demons line-up that was more than competitive in the first half.
Grand finalist Dennington had the biggest win of the round, an 89-point victory over East Warrnambool, while last year’s minor premier Kolora-Noorat shrugged off a persistent South Rovers after half-time to record a 47-point win.
