The former Koroit footballer was anointed Geelong’s 2014 VFL skipper on Wednesday night.
Gleeson’s leadership was first highlighted in 2001 when he captained Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup.
He spent three seasons as Werribee Tigers’ leader between 2009 and 2011 and captained Victoria in a state representative game against Western Australia last year.
Gleeson said it was an honour to replace retired Cats’ leader Troy Selwood — a former Brisbane Lions midfielder — as captain.
“I am humbled to think I have been captain of some clubs now,” he said.
“I am forever learning about the game. I feel I can lead and feel I set a good example for my teammates.
“I’ve always toed the line and that’s the reason I got the captaincy at Geelong.”
Port Fairy recruit Jackson Hollmer, an emergency for Geelong’s 2007, 2012 and 2013 VFL grand final teams, was announced as Gleeson’s understudy.
Gleeson said Hollmer was deserving of the vice-captaincy, saying the utility was an “outstanding footballer”.
“Hopefully Port Fairy don’t see too much of him, particularly against Koroit,” he said.
Gleeson, 31 next week, is unsure about his long-term football future.
The Cats’ premiership midfielder said he felt fit but would postpone making any decisions on his career beyond this season.
“I don’t want to say no and I don’t want to commit just yet.
“At the end of the day it’s up to Geelong Football Club.”
Gleeson said the Cats — hoping to avenge their 2013 grand final loss to Box Hill — had enjoyed a near incident-free pre-season.
“We have had one big hiccup. One of our true leaders Ben Raidme did an ACL on Friday night,” he said.
