Under 16 Hawks to bounce back against Warrnambool

EMMANUEL Hawks coach Dominic Quinlan says he is confident his under 16s can bounce back from defeat this weekend.

The Hawks will take on Warrnambool in a Hampden league preliminary final on Sunday after stumbling in the second semi-final.

Cobden won 7.4 (46) to 4.7 (31) at Camperdown’s Leura Oval to book the first berth in the under 16 grand final.

Quinlan said he believed returning players would help the young Hawks find the spark they needed against the Blues.

“It was disappointing that we lost. Cobden were obviously too strong on the day,” he said.

“Fortunately finishing on top, we get a second crack at it.

“The kids have worked hard all year to finish where they have.

“We didn’t play our best on the weekend. A few boys coming back in this week will help. We won’t be at full strength, but we’ll have a few back.”

Warrnambool won its way into the preliminary final with a 9.10 (64) to 9.4 (58) win against South Warrnambool at Terang Recreation Reserve.

The Blues beat the Hawks in their only meeting this year.

“I think the top three teams — Warrnambool, Cobden and the Hawks — have really stood out this year,” Quinlan said.

“It was always going to be a challenge to get to the grand final.

“We’re excited. The kids are really keen to get there. They’ve worked hard this year. They’re a terrific bunch of boys.”

North Warrnambool Eagles will take on Cobden in the under 14 preliminary final after contrasting fortunes on the weekend.

The Eagles lost to South Warrnambool 11.5 (71) to 4.2 (26) in the second semi-final at Terang.

The Bombers beat Koroit 5.8 (38) to 4.3 (27) in the first semi-final at Camperdown.

The winner will take on the Roosters in the grand final.

South Warrnambool will take on Emmanuel Hawks in the 14 and under netball preliminary final.

South lost to Warrnambool in the second semi-final 27-10 while the Hawks beat North Warrnambool Eagles 39-11 in the first semi-final.

The winner takes on the Blues.

All preliminary finals are at Koroit’s Victoria Park.
