The Thornton Street resident and his wife are believed to have woken up about 5am and found an offender in their home.
The husband was struck to the head with a piece of wood and knocked unconscious.
He was taken to the Camperdown hospital for treatment.
It is not known if anything was stolen from the property before the offender fled.
Camperdown police will conduct a door knock of neighbours this morning and Warrnambool crime investigation unit detectives are involved in overseeing the case.
