But for the prep pupil it was a family affair, with his grandfather Frank picking him up from the bus stop near his home at Tower Hill.
Damien Quirk, Jye’s father and Frank’s son, said the five-year-old was very excited about his first day of school. “He was absolutely buzzing,” he said.
“He was up at 6am to get dressed in his uniform.”
Damien said having his father drive the bus made it easy for Jye to overcome any first-day nerves.
“It made it exciting for him to get on the bus with Pa,” he said.
“He felt comfortable getting on the bus.”
Frank also drove Damien to St Patrick’s when he attended school.
“I went on the bus with dad as well,” he said.
Frank has driven school buses for nearly 50 years and now does a morning and evening run around the Koroit district, picking up and dropping off pupils from St Patrick’s and Koroit and District Primary Schools.
Frank said his grandson came up to the the front of the bus for a chat before he got off at school.
“He was pretty excited, looking forward to his first day.”
