His team will be patrolling popular foreshore venues and the CBD by foot and on bikes keeping a lookout as part of Summerbool — a joint operation with local police which ends on Monday.
City council officers and police will be paying particular notice at Lake Pertobe and the adjacent foreshore picnic area where alcohol bans are in force between 2pm to 4pm and 10pm to 11am.
Laws also prohibit open containers of alcohol on the foreshore between The Flume and Harbour Pavilion and in the CBD.
In 2009 and 2012 police arrested several people after Australia Day celebrations at Lake Pertobe descended into drunken brawls and piles of litter.
“It’s going to be a very busy weekend and we ask that people be mindful of others,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“We hope they have a safe and enjoyable Australia Day holiday. So far this summer there have been very few incidents we have had to act on.”
