Highly rated teenager Tom Hynes will compete in its 10-kilometre squad tomorrow.
Hynes finished the 2013 fun run fourth, clocking 33 minutes and 21 seconds.
The Emmanuel College student’s mother Fran works at St John of God Hospital, while his father Terry works at South West Health.
Alicia Boyd organised St John of God’s entry and was thrilled to have Hynes on board.
“Tom did work experience here and he cleans the cars on the weekends,” she said.
St John’s health services team will have representation in the 10km run, 6km run and 6km walk.
Karen Benson will captain the 10km run team, Boyd the 6km run and Karina Creed the 6km walk.
Boyd said it was the first time the health services department had thrown its support behind the Surf ‘T’ Surf teams event.
“We had lots of people competing individually last year but we didn’t do teams,” Boyd said.
“It’s been fun. There has been a bit of banter in the department and that’s been good for encouraging more people to join in.
“It is a good community event. There has been a bit of banter between the patients and ourselves too about how we’re going to go.”
Boyd said she hoped the hospital would enter a bigger squad next year.
“We are starting small this year and motivating our own section and hopefully next year we’ll be able to get more people from other areas of the hospital to join in as well,” she said.
The Surf ‘T’ Surf 10-kilometre run starts at 8am, with the 6km runners at 8.15am.
The 6km walkers will start at 8.20am and the 3km Lap of the Lake entrants at 8.25am.
