Historical group members found the $7000 canvas mural depicting the city’s Victorian era baths tagged with orange paint yesterday morning.
Member and past president of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society Andrew Suggett didn’t hide his feelings about the senseless act.
“It’s just plain vandalism ruining something a lot of volunteers spent time on putting together,” he said.
“I’m extremely disappointed.
“It’s only been up there for a month at most.”
Mr Suggett said police would photograph the mural while History House members would decide what steps to take.
The mural was commissioned by council with help from public and philanthropic donations.
Mr Suggett said he would attempt to clear the mural with a pressure cleaner.
“It makes me so mad,” he said.
“We had to look for the money. Most of it came from philanthropic groups. I’ve been down to take photos and I’ve spoken with police.”
