The man, aged in his 40s, was found out the front of a block of flats on Wanstead Street about 7am.
He was taken by ambulance to Warrnambool Base Hospital with injuries to the back of his head.
Police said the injuries were not life-threatening and the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
“We don’t know how the male has suffered those injuries and investigations are continuing,” Sergeant Rachell Field, from Warrnambool police said.
‘‘We have just been informed the injuries are not life-threatening.”
State Emergency Service members were called in to erect two tents to preserve any possible crime evidence.
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he noticed a man lying on the ground.
“The retired old man who lives in the front flat got a blanket and put it over him,’’ he said.
“He looked like he had been there for a while. There was a blood trail.
‘‘He looked to be in his 40s.”
