The Ward Street school has its girls’ cricket team and boys’ volleyball team on the verge of historic victories on the state stage.
The cricketers will take to the MCG for the final of the Cricket Victoria T20 Blast School Cup.
The volleyballers are bound for Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, where they will play in School Sport Victoria (SSV) primary schools’ finals.
Physical education teacher John Millard said the budding pupils should be proud to reach the finals.
“We’re really proud of what the kids have achieved this year. We’ve got a really dedicated bunch of children in grade 5 and 6,” he said.
“They want to be in teams and they train, which is really important. The training can be the difference in the end.
“Plus we’re giving them really good values for later on in life. If you want to do something, training is a really important part of it.”
Millard said he was unsure how the two sides would fare.
He said the cricketers, who he coaches, had made the girls’ final for the fourth time in the past five years.
“You don’t know what to expect. The girls’ competition is always a bit unpredictable,” he said.
“You always get one really good team with a couple of really good girls.”
The volleyballers, coached by Ann Dwyer, were comfortable winners in the Greater Western region final against Horsham.
“The boys have been practising really well with Ann. They’ve looked really good,” Millard said.
“We’ve never been down to state level but I gather there’d be some pretty good sides down there.”
St Joseph’s Primary School’s girls’ volleyball team is also in action today, hoping to add another state title to its collection. The school has already won the SSV football and netball titles this year, a rare double.
