The Corangamite Regional Library Corporation (CRLC) is giving library members the option to clear any outstanding charges for overdue loans by donating non-perishable food instead of money.
CRLC chairman Stephen Hart said staff members were delighted to last year waive 409 charges from 146 borrowers, who instead contributed food.
“We also noticed many library members donated food even though they didn’t have outstanding fines,” Cr Hart said.
The Food for Fines amnesty will run until December 21.
The CRLC suggested that donations be staple foods such as tinned meat, tinned fruit or tinned vegetables or festive specialty items such as mince pies, Christmas puddings and shortbread.
The food will be donated to local charities that provide meals and Christmas food hampers for the needy.
