ONCE a week, Warrnambool West Primary School children are busy in the school canteen selling treats.
The grade five and six pupils have raised more than $2400 for Peter’s Project and at a school assembly this week presented a cheque to founder Vicki Jellie.
The fund-raiser was co-ordinated by a group of grade six children and every Friday different pupils were rostered on to sell the range of goodies at the canteen.
Grade six pupil Jorja Graham, Isabella McGifford and Jindara Chatfield said it was important that people in the community had access to cancer treatment because it helped saves lives.
“We were going to give the money to the school for school supplies,” Jindara said.
“We decided to give to something more worthy and discussed a local charity.”
Teacher Siobhan Lilley said all grade five and six children were rostered on for the fund-raising.
“When we talked about doing it for Peter’s Project we talked about the families going through cancer and the kids left behind while their family gets treatment,” she said.
“We talked about how important it is to really support families to stay together.”
Ms Jellie said she was proud of the children’s efforts.
“It’s a wonderful thing for them to support their community and they’ve worked hard to do it,” she said.
