MERINO farmer John Northcott has been elected unopposed as the new mayor of Glenelg Shire.
Council stuck with tradition at a special meeting on Tuesday night, when previous mayor Karen Stephens stepped down after 12 months in the job.
But there was little interest in the position from other councillors, with Cr Northcott the sole name on the ballot.
Speaking to The Standard, Cr Northcott named Portland Harbour’s public boat ramp, a sealed airstrip in Casterton and upgraded netball courts in Tyrendarra as key priorities during his term.
“My priority is to get the four-lane boat ramp going,” he said. “We’ve been at it for three years. It’s going to tender and looks like it will happen before April.
“If we can tick one or two of those off in the next 12 months we’ll have done a good job.”
The 62-year-old was elected to council in 2008 and runs a fourth-generation beef and prime lamb property near Merino.
He paid tribute to the outgoing mayor.
“She did a mighty job,” he said of Cr Stephens.
