THE ever-growing Dennington community is set to come together next month for a major new event.
The inaugural Dennington’s Day Out will be held on Sunday, November 17 at St John’s Primary School.
An organising committee of 20 people from the school has been set up to oversee the running of the event.
Committee member and teacher at St John’s, Amy Holscher, said the school was organising the event but Dennington’s Day Out was focused on the whole community.
“The big thing we want to get out there is that this is an event for the Dennington community,” Miss Holscher said.
“We want to strengthen partnerships between the school and the Dennington community and to provide an event where the people of Dennington can come and meet each other in a social setting.
“There are so many new families in Dennington and it is growing all the time, so Dennington’s Day Out will bring everyone together.”
The organising committee is already well advanced in its planning for the event and has formed partnerships with groups and clubs in the community.
They’ve arranged for a barbecue, lolly stall, Devonshire teas, history displays, basketball skills sessions, a Halloween tent, children’s activity area and emergency service displays.
The day’s target audience of family groups will be catered for with $20 pre-purchase armbands for children’s entertainment and rides.
Included in the armband package is a laser strike field which will be set up in the school yard.
School principal Kathy Dalton will don waterproof gear for the day as she perches atop a dunking tank — children getting the chance to throw at the bullseye trigger target and plunge her into the water.
“The children at the school are so excited about the day, they are all really looking forward to it coming around,” Miss Holscher said.
