MARK Brightwell knows well the challenges and long hours in running a small business.
“You’ve got to have a passion for it really,” he said from his Bright Bird Espresso eatery on Liebig Street which he operates with his wife Katrina.
“You work long hours and very hard for what you get.”
Tomorrow he and hundreds of other operators around Victoria will be hoping their communities drop in for the “shop big in small business” promotion.
Retailers, cafés, restaurants and service providers have registered for the state government initiative, designed to recognise the contribution of operators with 20 or less employees.
Shoppers who register beforehand will be eligible for gift cards that can be redeemed on the day.
“In an era where a lot of shopping is done on the internet, local businesses can find it tough,” Mr Brightwell said.
“If people shop local they support local jobs and the local economy.
“Where we are in Liebig Street we try to shop locally at other businesses as much as possible.
“We find that in harder times people go for smaller items.”
