DENNINGTON will unveil its latest Sri Lankan recruit when Warrnambool and District Cricket Association’s 2013-14 season starts today.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Daminda Ranaweera will play in Dennington Red’s Twenty20 fixtures against Nestles and Wesley-CBC at Allan Oval.
Drew said Ranaweera spent four seasons in the United Kingdom and played high-level cricket in his home country.
“We have four guys under 17 so he brings a lot of experience to a young side,” he said.
“We knew Daminda wanted to come out and we jumped at it. He’s a level two coach and will do a lot of work with the juniors.” Drew said the Dogs, coming off a two-day grand final appearance, were keen to start their 2013-14 season strongly in the Twenty20 format.
“Our guys are looking forward to playing,” he said.
“Twenty20 can be won and lost in the first five overs.
“We have had good numbers and have two sides.”
West Warrnambool coach Dean Hurford said the Twenty20 concept, a precursor to the one-day and two-day competitions, was important.
The two highest-ranked teams will play in the final in January for a place in the Sungold Cup. “You are mad if you don’t try and win the Twenty20s — $15,000 could set the club up going forward,” Hurford said.
“We just want success, we want personal success and we want to see the kids develop.”
Hurford returns to West Warrnambool after an 11-year absence.
“They didn’t have a coach appointed about two months ago and my wife encouraged me to do it more than anyone else,” he said.
“I felt like I really wanted to get back involved in the club once they approached me to do it.
“(English recruit) Karl (Turner) has certainly got the place buzzing, which is fantastic and we’ve put a lot of time into the fringe division one and division two players.”
Hurford said he expected promising teenager Will Mills to spend most of the season at Victorian Premier Cricket club Carlton. Mills made his second XI debut last weekend. “I have no doubt he’ll stay there and he should,” Hurford said. “He took 3/30 on Saturday. Will has a fantastic attitude and temperament.
“He’s a quiet kid who wants to learn.”
