WARRNAMBOOL golfers Peter Ryan and Don Porter made the most of a day in the sun by winning a Warrnambool Golf Club veterans’ tournament.
Ryan and Porter claimed the Brian O’Leary Trophy for their four-ball stableford win in the tournament on Tuesday, staged as part of Victorian seniors’ week.
The pair signed for 49 stableford points, ahead of Bill Millard and Chris Millard, on 46. Kevin O’Keefe and David Shangie were third with 44 points.
Robyn Nestacott and Alison Sinclair took the women’s honours with 41 points.
Mary Myers and Moira Mann were second with 40 points while Di Martini and Marian McKenzie were third with 37 points.
Warrnambool Golf Club veterans’ president Andrew Suggett said the event attracted a capacity 118-golfer field, which included 40 from outside Warrnambool.
Suggett described the tournament as “a perfect day”.
“It seems to have grown. We tried it about three or four years ago and now it’s gone gangbusters,” he said.
“It’s just people have got to know the event. We have good prizes and the course is in immaculate shape.
“We should be playing the British Open on it.”
