“SILLY” guesses have won Warrnambool woman Shirley Fern a new 127cm (50-inch) television, thanks to her persistence in The Standard’s Spot the Ball competition.
The retired local government administration worker was yesterday awarded the high-definition plasma TV, courtesy of The Good Guys, after her name was drawn from a pool of weekly winners.
Each football round this year gave The Standard’s readers a chance to win a $40 gift voucher and enter the draw to win the major prize, simply by marking pictures where they thought a football had been edited out of an action photo.
Mrs Fern was thrilled to win after claiming two of the weekly prizes.
“I don’t know much about football, it’s just sheer luck,” she said.
“You’ve got to be in it to win it. If you’re not in it, you can’t win it.
“Every week I entered, though I may have missed one week.
“One time I put (the ball) on top of a pole, one time on top of a car — I do those silly things and it works out for me.
“I’ve never won the main prize so that’s a real thrill.
“I enter a lot of competitions.”
Mrs Fern said her favourite TV shows were news, current affairs, cooking, travel and game shows.
“Everybody will be coming to watch now.
“I’ve got a 40-inch TV but was going to put it in the bedroom and replace it.
“Having a free 50-inch will be great; it’s fantastic.”
