FOODIES are in luck with local chefs and winemakers joining forces to showcase delicious food and wine from the Great Ocean Road.
The casual degustation-style Hunter and Gatherer stand-up dinner will feature local boutique wineries and renowned celebrity indigenous guest chef Mark Olive from The Black Olive catering business.
Mr Olive will work with chefs from Timboon, Port Campbell, Warrnambool and Port Fairy, each sourcing prime, local ingredients from their home towns and surrounding areas to create a menu showcasing the true taste of the Great Ocean Road.
Mr Olive is one of Australia’s most celebrated chefs and is also the host of The Outback Cafe on SBS.
Shipwreck Coast Marketing CEO Carole Reid said while the Great Ocean Road region was known for its strong nature-based products, they wanted to show the diversity of local produce and encourage local chefs to increase and feature local produce on menus throughout the region.
“And the Great Ocean Road Food Adventure in September will do just that and thus this event will become an advocate for the promotion of local food along the Great Ocean Road and the region” she said.
Mr Olive will also present a three-hour hands-on workshop at South West TAFE today working with indigenous ingredients including kangaroo, emu and locally-sourced herbs as part of the Great Ocean Road Food Adventure.
South West TAFE commercial cookery teacher Troy Saulitis said working with the celebrity chef would inspire the students.
“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity. It’s very beneficial and they will learn from the experience,” he said.
The students will learn about the herbs and use practical skills to prepare some of the menu items in South West TAFE’s large production kitchen which has the latest cooking technology. Some students will also serve meals to up to 150 people at the Pavilion Cafe and Bar during the three-and-a-half hour service period.
The degustation dinner will be held at Pavilion Cafe and Bar tomorrow night and is being presented by Shipwreck Coast Marketing.
Tickets are $80 per person which includes an eight-course degustation menu, welcome drink on arrival and commemorative glass of wine.
