BAKERIES in Warrnambool and Colac will be targeted in the latest campaign by the federal Fair Work Ombudsman to ensure workers are being paid correctly.
Inspectors are auditing 160 independent and franchise-operated retail bakeries in Melbourne and regional Victoria to not only ensure correct payment, but also appropriate records and pay slips are maintained.
Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said there had been a persistent number of complaints about the bakery sector including a number from young workers.
“This industry employs a significant number of young workers, but they can be vulnerable to exploitation because they’re often not aware of their workplace entitlements or where to go for information and assistance,” she said.
“Where inspectors identify issues such as underpayments to staff, they’ll work with the employer to help them voluntarily rectify underpayments and direct them to free resources to help them meet their obligations in the future,” Ms James explained.
