MININERA and District league best and fairest winner Brad Keilar wants to “play for a few years yet”.
The Wickliffe-Lake Bolac veteran enters Saturday’s grand final on the back of his second W. J. Lewis Medal.
Keilar, 35, polled 27 votes to finish six clear of Tatyoon’s Sean McDougall on Monday night.
The ruckman-forward kicked 16 goals in his 16 appearances.
“It was a different feeling this time, totally unexpected,” he said.
“It got to about five rounds to go and I was four votes up and I thought Sean McDougall would get two or three best-on-grounds and overtake me, but it didn’t quite work out that way.”
Wickliffe-Lake Bolac coach Nick Willox said Keilar had a blistering start to the season.
“He had a brilliant pre-season. He dropped weight from last year and got fit,” he said.
“He started with a bang and in the first 10 games was in our best every week.”
Willox said Keilar’s ability to play in the ruck and up forward was an asset.
“He’s six-foot-five (199cm), so he’s not a tall ruckman, but his fitness allows him to cover a heap of ground all day,” he said.
“He’s almost become our fourth onballer.”
Keilar, who has had stints at Wimmera league club Ararat and Warrnambool and District league club Dennington, said Wickliffe-Lake Bolac matched up well against its grand final opponent Moyston-Willaura.
All three contests this season have come down to single-figure margins.
The Magpies recorded an eight-point win in round one, while the Pumas reversed the result in round 12, winning by three points.
Moyston-Willaura edged home by one point in the second semi-final, booking its grand final spot.
Wickliffe-Lake Bolac, the minor premier, claimed an eight-point win over Tatyoon in the preliminary final.
“I am looking forward to it,” Keilar said of the grand final.
“Hopefully it is a good match like a couple of weeks ago and hopefully we have a win this time.
“We need to get a good start and can’t let them jump us like Tatyoon did on Saturday.”
The Magpies’ most recent flag was in 2005, while they lost the 2011 grand final to Tatyoon.
