A HOUSE inspection prompted a police tip-off which resulted in a young Warrnambool couple being found in possession of almost half a kilogram of cannabis.
Dylan Stone, 21, and Jessica Pennery-Keenan, 21, both of Denny Street, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court yesterday after being arrested on Wednesday.
Mr Stone did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until September 17.
He has been charged with trafficking and possessing cannabis, possessing the proceeds of crime ($1565 cash) and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Ms Pennery-Keenan was granted bail until the same date charged with trafficking, using and possessing cannabis, possessing amphetamine and possessing prescription medication.
It is expected other charges will be laid during an ongoing police investigation.
Magistrate Terry Wilson said the police evidence suggested something nefarious for Ms Pennery-Keenan.
But he said it was unlikely the case would be finalised in three months and there was a chance the accused could spend longer in custody than she would receive as a penalty.
He released Ms Pennery-Keenan on bail with a $5000 surety, with conditions she has to live with her mother, obey a curfew and submit to drug tests.
A 17-year-old youth has also been released on bail after being charged with trafficking and possessing seven grams of amphetamine.
Police yesterday opposed bail, claiming Ms Pennery-Keenan was an unacceptable risk of continuing to traffic cannabis, amphetamine, ecstasy and methamphetamine, known as ice.
Warrnambool police Senior Constable James Van Engelen told court that police were contacted at 2.50pm on Wednesday after a real estate agent inspected a home in Denny Street and reported finding what was believed to be a bag of amphetamine.
Police then watched the home and intercepted a white Corolla which left the property. A search of the vehicle and the unlicensed 17-year-old driver uncovered seven grams of amphetamine.
Senior Constable Van Engelen said when police executed the search warrant at the home, Mr Stone and Ms Pennery-Keenan fled out the back door and jumped a fence but were soon after arrested in Raglan Parade.
He said police found 480 grams of cannabis in a large vacuum-sealed bag under the bed in the main bedroom, prescription medication in Ms Pennery-Keenan’s handbag and a quantity of amphetamine.
Senior Constable Van Engelen said Mr Stone had a lengthy criminal history and was on parole.
