A PORTLAND family was evacuated early this morning after offenders set fire to wheelie bins which then engulfed a fence and endangered a home in Coolibah Court.
Portland police Sergeant Ryan Nelson said the alarm was raised at 1.42am after someone set fire to two wheelie bins next to a timber fence.
He said the fence then caught fire and police officers who were first to arrive at the scene used two fire extinguishers to try and put out the blaze.
"Police arrived before fire brigade members, but the two extinguishers were not enough to put it out. The fire brigade had to extinguish the fire," he said.
"The occupants of the Coolibah Court home were evacuated while all that was going on. Damage has been estimated at about $500 and the end result was not too bad.
"The two fire extinguishers might have stemmed the tide until the fire brigade arrived. The family was very lucky," he said.
