The fort, at the Manifold Street kinder, was built at the start of the term but was officially opened yesterday.

The Warrnambool City Council contributed $21,000 to the project with the kindergarten raising $2000 through parent fund-raising activities.

Teacher Petrina Abrahams said the fort was important for the children’s gross motor development and their social skills.

“The children love it,” Ms Abrahams said.

“From the first day they’ve been really excited.

“The kindergarten committee and parents have worked really hard with council to get this great outcome for the kids.”

The fort features a curving slide, wave bridge, spiral climber and is surrounded by soft fall material.

It replaces an older structure which had reached the end of its life.

Warrnambool City Council manager of community services Kellie King said supporting children’s physical development is a critical part of a quality kindergarten education.

“Investment in play equipment is about more than enhancing enjoyment of a space,” Ms King said.

“It’s an important component of the educational service that we provide.”
