Look after the traders, says council candidate

BUSINESSWOMAN Kylie Gaston says she knows how difficult it is to make a dollar and wants to see Warrnambool City Council do its absolute best for traders.

The mother of two and restaurant owner is putting her hand up for council and said she was a doer who wasn’t afraid of hard work.

Mrs Gaston and her husband Jean-Philippe moved to Warrnambool eight years ago, operating the Liebig Street restaurant Beach Babylon.

Yesterday she told The Standard the council needed to work towards a sense of respect for each other in order to achieve goals as a team.

“One of the skills I feel I’ve learnt is the ability to help different people work together,” she said.

“I would strive to work well with my fellow councillors.

“I’ve seen the sense of respect people in Warrnambool have for each other and that is what council needs to represent.

“I’m running as an independent who will listen and engage with the community as much as I can. It’s not a decision I take lightly.

“I felt if I didn’t give it a shot I’d regret not trying. I’m not highly political, simply like to get involved.”

Before returning to Australia, Mrs Gaston and her husband lived in France for 11 years. They now run Charlie’s on East in Port Fairy.

“I realise how hard it is to earn a dollar and why it needs to be invested with the absolute minimum amount of wastage,” she said.

“If elected I would enjoy trying to make sure we spend as well as we possibly can. We need to do our absolute best for our traders.

“We have absolutely fallen in love with Warrnambool.

“From the start the people were really welcoming and lovely. I want to put something back.”

Mrs Gaston said there was a need of a facility where mothers could feed and change their babies in Liebig Street and a kindergarten in north Warrnambool.

Mrs Gaston’s nomination follows the declarations of businessman Brian Kelson, retired teacher Adrian Jacobs, developer Darren Harris, businessman Jed Mast and chef Peter Sycopoulis last year.
