A NEW support group for families with loved ones serving in the defence forces has made a great start.
The group, which included four families, met for the first time on Tuesday night
Warrnambool RSL sub-branch president John Miles said the families were able to share their stories, concerns and experiences.
"One woman's son has just joined the army and she was getting calls from him once a week," Mr Miles said.
"But now she hasn't heard from him for six weeks.
"I'd thought they (the group) might talk to each other for a few minutes but they talked for nearly an hour.
"I'm very happy with the way it went."
Mr Miles said the group was for families with members serving in the defence forces in Australia or overseas.
He said the need wasn't new and the group would help families get through worrying times.
"If there is anyone else that would like to be involved they can contact me and I'll put them in touch," he said.
